From Aspiration to Action: A Framework for Manufacturers to Gauge Sustainable Practices

Sustainability goals without measurement are just aspirations. This piece explores how COSIRI translates environmental commitments into measurable milestones.

Every major manufacturer has now published a sustainability commitment. Net-zero by 2050. Carbon neutral by 2040. Scope 3 reduction targets. But ambition without measurement is aspiration — and aspiration alone does not satisfy investors, regulators, or supply chain partners.

The Measurement Gap

Most manufacturers have strong commitments but weak measurement infrastructure. They know their Scope 1 and 2 emissions because regulators require disclosure. But Scope 3 emissions, which represent 70-90% of most manufacturers’ carbon footprint, remain largely unmeasured.

What COSIRI Measures

COSIRI assesses manufacturing sustainability across 12 dimensions covering energy management, emissions accounting, circular economy practices, sustainable procurement, workforce wellbeing, and governance. Each dimension is scored on a 0-5 maturity scale, producing a composite sustainability readiness index.

Critically, COSIRI includes Scope 3 assessment — measuring supply chain sustainability exposure and providing a structured pathway to address it. This is the gap most frameworks miss.

From Aspirational to Actionable

The COSIRI assessment produces three outputs: a current-state baseline, a benchmark against global industry peers, and a prioritised roadmap identifying the highest-impact actions to improve sustainability score. This converts an open-ended commitment into a specific action plan.
